About Dartmouth Devon.

Dartmouth is located 35 miles south of Exeter and the word picturesque perfectly describes this lovely town set on the banks of the River Dart. There are steep wooded hillsides on either side of the town and an embankment that runs along its length provides visitors with a pleasant and relaxing promenade to stroll along. Dartmouth offers many fine sights, the buildings in the narrow streets are spectacular and the busy estuary is a delight or it is possible to go on one of the many boat trips that depart from the waters edge. No major road has yet to reach Dartmouth and the character of the place is relatively unspoilt but there is still plenty to do and see.
For more than a 1000 years mariners have embarked on epic journeys form Dartmouth harbour. The Norman's are known to have used Dartmouth as a trading port across the English Channel, Richard the Lionheart set sail for the crusades and it was in the shelter of Dartmouth harbour that Elizabeth's "men o' war" lay in wait to see off stragglers after the Spanish Armada. The Mayflower with the Pilgrim Fathers is known to have landed at Dartmouth for repairs before setting off from Plymouth on 20th August 1620 to the New World

Dartmouth has also been immortalised on the small screen and at the cinema. The cobbled Cove called Bayards Cove was regularly seen in the television series The Onedin Line and the quay has been used in the filming of Sense and Sensibility starring Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant.
Two imposing Castles have kept guard at the mouth of the River Dart, the first Dartmouth Castle was built in 1481 and featured many up to date defences The second is Kingswear Castle on the opposite bank of the river. The Castle maintained its technological advantage for almost five hundred years. By the Victorian era Dartmouth Castle was furnished with a Palmerston Gun Battery which could hit a target at a distance of two miles. At the southern end of Bayard's Cove is a small fortification built by Dartmouth Corporation in 1510 to provide additional protection to the harbour.
The Inventor of the Steam Pumping Engine, Thomas Newcomen, was born in Dartmouth in 1663 and a working example of one of his engines can still be seen in the Engine House.
Dartmouth stages a colourful Carnival in June and the Dartmouth Regatta in late August is a very popular attraction drawing crowds of people from all walks of life.
