About Exeter Devon.

Exeter is the regional capital of the southwest, it is a beautiful and lively city and also the county town. It has with a majestic cathedral dating back to Norman times and the city also boasts many other fine old buildings in fact the present high street was in place nearly 200 years before the Romans arrived.
Exeter has been inhabited for more than 2000 years through every significant period of English history. Remains of each period are still present today despite a quarter of the City having been destroyed during the Second World War.
Until the 20th century Exeter was the lowest bridging point of the River Exe, and the ideal spot for development. The Latin name for Exeter is Isca Dumnoniorum which suggests, that the city was originally a Celtic town. The Dumnones were a Celtic tribe who inhabited part of the South West peninsula of Britain, during the Iron Age. It was the celts who named the River Exe calling it Eisca meaning ?a river abunding in fish?
The country?s oldest canal runs from the area known as the Quayside down to the River Exe, passing the ancient town of Topsham. Exeter was once a port, limited by tides of the River Exe and the small town of Topsham on the estuary, developed as a port for the city. The goods were transported to the city's quays in flat-bottomed barges When the ship canal was constructed ocean going ships could reach the city's quays. When the vessels increased in size with the development of steam power the canal was used for leisure boating. Today the Quayside makes a welcome retreat from the bustle of the city and the manually operated, Butts Ferry crosses the river between the Quay and the opposite bank for the princely sum of just 20 pence. This ferry service apparently dates back to 1641

During World War II Exeter was bombed by the German Luftwaffe. The raid of 1942 that formed part of the Baedeker Blitz leveled forty acres of the city. The areas most affected were adjacent to the central High Street and Sidwell Street. Many historic buildings were destroyed, and others, including Exeter Cathedral, damaged. The city has been rebuilt, mostly in the 1950s and an attempt was made to preserve Exeter?s ancient heritage. Exeter's shopping experience is now set to be transformed by the ?175m Princesshay development which is due to be fully completed by Autumn 2007. The development work will not affect the city centre's main shopping streets. There has been local opposition to the scheme as it is thought that the area will be too modern. Exeter has, in the past, been regarded as an architectural Mecca in southern England, whereas now it has been suggested that Exeter will only be a city with some beautiful buildings rather than a beautiful city
Among the many notable buildings in Exeter are the Cathedral and the ruins of Rougemont Castle. Exeter Cathedral is one of England's most beautiful Medieval cathedrals and is a fine example of Decorated Gothic architecture. For centuries Exeter has been dominated by the Cathedral with its two massive Norman towers and the West Front is fantastically decorated with sculptures of kings, saints and angels. The inside of the Cathedral is well worth a visit and the grandeur of the interior is difficult to describe, priceless treasures and beautiful artefacts are too much to take in on one visit. The Cathedral is also the repository of the Exeter Book an original manuscript and one of the most important documents in Anglo-Saxon literature. The book contains virtually all the surviving poetry in Old English. And also includes most of the more highly regarded shorter poems and a series of riddles, a handful of which are famously lewd.
Rougemont Castle was first built in 1068 to help William the Conqueror maintain control over the city of Exeter The castle is perched on an ancient volcanic hill, and is named after the red stone found in the hill, that was used in the construction of the original buildings. Sadly today only the ruins remain.
Exeter is easily accessible by many different means of transport, the M5 motorway to Bristol and Birmingham starts at Exeter, and then connects at Bristol with the M4 to London. When traveling west, the A38 connects Exeter to Plymouth and South Cornwall, whilst the A30 continues to Okehampton and North Cornwall. Exeter is served by two main railway stations. Exeter St David's is used by all services while Exeter Central is more convenient for the city centre but served only by local services and the main line route to London Waterloo. Exeter International Airport lies east of the city and the local airline, now known as Flybe, offers a variety of scheduled and charter flights including a seasonal service to Toronto in Canada.
Exeter is a city of many delights, far too many to mention in this short description, and a visit in the near future is highly recommended.
