About Beesands Devon.

Beesands is located seven and half miles south west of Dartmouth on the A379. it is part of Start Bay which is a beautiful bay between the River Dart's estuary and Start Point.
Today this small village is only a single row of cottages l behind a mile long shingle beach but it has a village green a pub and a shop. Tourism is the main industry but once Beesands was a busy fishing village. Records show that boats laden with fish and shellfish were drawn up the beach almost to the cottages. At the end of the century there were dozens of boats operating off Beesands beach and six to eight tons of crabs went to Billingsgate market each week during the summer.
Beesands has fortunately escaped the devastating fate that befell its very near neighbour Hallsands. This village was almost completely destroyed by a violent storm in 1917. Controversy about the fate of Hallsands still rages but many believe that the village was lost as a direct consequence of the dredging operation for the extensions to Plymouth harbour. 650,000 tons of shingle was allegedly taken from the beach.
Beesands is a charming quiet place and well worth a visit.
