About: The seats on the top deck of the tram that was waiting in Seaton Tram Station. It is a good idea to take and hat and gloves if you decide to go up the stairs to the top deck on a chilly day.

About Seaton Devon.
Seaton is located seven and half miles East of Sidmouth on the B3172. Lying at the mouth of the River Axe, Seaton is sheltered by the white cliffs of Beer head and the red sandstone of Haven Cliffs. From Seaton it is possible to visit all three eras of rocks in an amazing 185 million-year geological walk through time.
Seaton?s history is closely linked to the sea, from Stone Age man fishing using flints from the cliffs to make the tools to a Roman port. The Saxons are known to have occupied both sides of the river and the area was known as Fleot, the Saxon name for a creek. Shingle steadily built up at the mouth of the estuary and eventually formed the area that is now known as Seaton Marshes now a Local Nature Reserve. By the reign of Edward III the name Fleot was changed to Sea Tun (Seaton) meaning a sea farm. Salt became an important trade for the area and when this industry went into rapid decline the fishing and farming were of vital importance until the coming of the railway when Seaton became a modest resort. Seaton has a justly earned reputation for being 'a friendly town by the sea' and the population has increased from 2500 in 1970 to the present 6500 and this number is expected to continue to increase as more residential housing is built. In 2005 Seaton celebrated its 1000 anniversary of the granting of its Charter and it is twinned with Thury-Harcourt in the Basse-Normandie r?gion of France.
The mile long beach at Seaton Bay offers opportunities for water sports of all kinds, from sailing and swimming, to diving and windsurfing. Seaton is often referred to as 'the gateway to the Jurassic Coast'. In September 2005 a report commissioned by East Devon District Council named Seaton and Exmouth as the two most likely locations for a World Class Visitor Gateway Centres. The idea is to create a visitor Gateway Centre in Seaton adjacent to the Seaton Tramway Terminus and TIC with two core themes being the Jurassic Coast and the Axe Estuary.
Seaton Tramway, operates electric trams on the former British Rail line along the beautiful Axe Estuary. The following information has been extracted from the official tramway website at http://www.tram.co.uk "Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. The coastal resort of Seaton is now a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the historic town of Colyton is described as "Devon's Most Rebellious Town" for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685" From Seaton Tramways open top trams it is possible to see 30 to 50 different varieties of birds. In 2002 the Tramway was awarded "Best Small Attraction" under 100,000 visitors per year by South West Tourism.
Seaton is a great place to have a holiday it's a lovely area and the ideal place to explore so many different areas of Devon and as an added bonus the County of Dorset with the delights of Lyme Regis, Charmouth etc. is only a few miles away
