About: The remains of the village of Hallsands as seen from Start Point. Following the removal of vast amounts of shingle for use in the construction of dockyards at Plymouth the village of Hallsands was destroyed by gales on January 26th 1917. Years before several houses had in fact been washed away, despite this dredging still continued. It is a miracle that the loss of homes for 159 people did not result in the loss of life.
